Real nutrition vs sneaky tricks
Great nutrition doesn’t need to be a mystery. We know that dogs thrive on a diet full of fresh meat and vegetables, an appropriate amount of healthy grains and essential vitamins and minerals – that’s it!

Tail-wagging digestion vs tummy troubles

Seasonal skin allergies

Seasonal skin allergies

May 31, 2021

For many dogs the warmer weather can mean skin problems due to pollens, grasses and ectoparasites like fleas and mites. Seasonal skin allergies can cause generalised itch, hair loss, ear problems and feet chewing. The breadth of this topic is huge so I won’t be attempting to cover the lot here, but here are my responses to the most common problems I’m seeing at the moment that are all related to environmental skin allergies. Sometimes, extra tests are required to rule out other causes before the diagnosis of skin allergy is made.

My dog is itchy but we never see any fleas
Dogs can suffer from fleas that are unseen. Fleas can spend almost their entire life cycle away from their host. They only need to “bite” to obtain a feed before laying eggs. Adult fleas can live quite happily in the environment while biting your pet and causing a flea allergy and itch without ever being seen. Skin irritation and hair loss is often seen around the tail base and lower back. Fleas are certainly not the only cause of an itchy dog, but they are more common in the summer. It’s worth using a preventative at this time of year because usually once you see them on your pets, they are everywhere! If you ahve an itchy dog that is not on flea prevention, it’s best not to assume they have an allergy to something else until flea prevention is being used regularly.

My dog is licking its paws ALL the time
Many dogs with skin allergies will lick their paws. On white dogs, this usually makes the fur on their paws look pink. Paw linking is most commonly associated with environmental allergy, or atopy. This is like hayfever in humans but when dogs inhale pollens that they are sensitive to, they will often develop an skin itch. The paws are often the first and worst affected part of the body. This type of allergy can be due to contact as well as inhaled allergens. There are a range of medical management options for dogs with atopy. These range from short-term cortisone treatments and regular bathing, to down-regulate inflammatory mediators in teh skin, or immune-modulating or immunosuppressive medications for more severely affected animals.

My dog has a sore ear
We see more sore ears at this time of the year. Common causes are shampoo in the ears (we tend to bath our dogs more in the summer) and daily swimming. Both of these factors compromise the ability of the ear to dry out properly and this allows bacteria and yeast to overgrow in the ear canal. Dogs with skin allergies will also often suffer from more inflammation within the ears during the summer months and this predisposes them to ear infections. If your pet has a sore ear or is shaking its head, a trip to the vet is well advised. The vet will take a sample of the debris in the ear canal which can then be examined under a microscope to identify the type of infection. They will then be able to advise you on the correct treatment for your pet. There are at least three different types of infection types that are very common, and each requires a different type of ear drop for successful management.

My dog is losing patches of hair
Patchy hair loss can definitely be part of a skin allergy. Itchy dogs will often scratch at the same spot, causing abrasions and hair loss. Hair loss can also be a sign of more serious underlying problems – it’s a good idea to head to the vet, they can tell you whether a blood test is required. Patchy hair loss can also be a sign of mites, which are most commonly seen in dogs under 12 months of age. If the patches look suspicious, your vet will usually want to take a skin scraping. This is then examined under a microscope to look for mites. It is important to rule out other potential causes before assuming patchy hair loss is due to a skin allergy.

My dog has conjunctivitis
Allergic conjunctivitis is responsible for 90% of the conjunctivitis cases seen in dogs. If your dog has sore eyes, your vet will want to ensure there are no scratches or ulcers on the surface of the eyeball (cornea). Allergic conjunctivitis is usually itchy, so dogs that have been rubbing their eyes can often cause damage to the cornea if the problem is not addressed promptly. The treatment for allergic conjunctivitis involves eyedrops containing cortisone. If the cornea has been scratched, however, the cortisone will cause serious complications in the eye very quickly. your vet will need to apply a painless fluorescent eyedrop stain to your pet’s eyes to check for any damage before deciding it is safe to apply cortisone to the eyes to alleviate the allergy.

When do I switch my puppy to 4Legs adult dog food?

When do I switch my puppy to 4Legs
adult dog food?

May 31, 2021

Puppies are ready to be gradually transitioned to adult food once they reach about 80% of their expected mature (adult) body weight.

Small dogs grow faster than larger dogs, so small dogs will reach 80% of their mature weight and be ready to be weaned onto adult dog food at a younger age than large dogs.  The following is a guide to the approximate age at which different types of dogs should be gradually transitioned to adult dog food (this is best done gradually over a period of about a month by blending increasing quantities of adult food with the puppy food).

Expected Adult Body WeightAge of Transition to Adult Food
Less than 5kg7 months +
5kg to 25kg12 months +
25kg to 50kg18 months +

The above is intended as a rough guide.  Please contact us if you need more specific information regarding your puppy.

How do I switch my dog to 4Legs?

How do I switch my dog to 4Legs?

August 17, 2020

When making the switch to 4Legs it’s best to introduce your dog to their new food gradually – with a transition period of around one or two weeks.

We recommend this gradual approach to avoid tummy upsets. Some dog can be prone to diarrhoea, flatulence or occasional vomiting when their diet changes, especially when they have been eating the same food for a long time. Introducing 4Legs slowly can help avoid these issues, but always keep an eye on your dog’s reaction and overall wellbeing.

Here’s what we suggest:

  • Day 1-2: mix 25% 4Legs with 75% old food
  • Day 3-4: mix 50% 4Legs with 50% old food
  • Day 5-6: mix 75% 4Legs with 25% old food
  • Day 7: 100% 4Legs

Make it extra tasty

If a gradual introduction isn’t enough to get your fussy dog into eating his 4Legs, here are some extra tips for making dinner even more delicious…

  • Warm = tasty. Warm food smells better. Heating your dog’s food very slightly will make it smell tastier and more appealing. Just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds.
  • Skip the treats. If your dog isn’t eating their dinner, cutting back or eliminating treats might be the answer. Don’t give your dog anything that might take the edge off their appetite.
  • Give them a hand. Don’t be afraid to hand feed your dog for a little while as they adjust to a new food and/or feeding routine.

While it’s common for dogs to develop transient diarrhoea or flatulence when starting a new food, but this should resolve within a few days. If your pet has persistent diarrhoea or will not eat, it’s a good idea to get in touch with your vet.

If you have any issues with a 4Legs product, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our helpdesk

What does natural mean?

What does natural mean?

October 15, 2020

We believe natural means simple, real food recipes

At 4Legs our food philosophy is simple: we believe in a diet that is full of fresh meat and vegetables, an appropriate amount of health grains and essential vitamins and minerals -that’s it!

We believe that natural means creating food packed full of fresh Australian meat, fish, veggies and fruit – it’s delicious and nutritious.

However, not all natural products are created equal. Some brands claim to be natural but still use colours to disguise discolouration or high amounts of sugar and salt to preserve their food.

At 4Legs we have nothing to hide, we don’t add preservatives, artificial colours or flavours or added salt or sugar.

This is why you may occasionally notice some variation the appearance or texture of our products.

Variations in colour
We could add colour-fixing nitrite preservatives or disguise this discolouration by adding colours to our product, but we don’t. We believe in creating a natural, fresh product, free from any additives. Occasionally you might notice a discolouration on our roll products, you can find out why here.

Variations in texture
You might notice an occasional difference in the texture of some of our products – don’t worry it’s totally normal! Because we add whole, fresh ingredients to our food, the consistency of these ingredients can change depending on what is in season, weather conditions and growing location. We do our best to ensure consistency in our ingredients and work closely with our local suppliers to ensure we receive ingredients of a high standard.

What’s not normal?
If you notice a strange/unpleasant smell or texture, please get in touch. Unfortunately there are rare occasions where packaging is compromised or product is improperly refrigerated.

The benefits of a natural and balanced diet are the same for both humans and dogs; eating fresh whole foods and avoiding additives, preservatives and artificial colours and flavours helps support good health.
